Obama signs Congress insider trading bill – BBC News Content
Yaaaay! President Obama signed into law a bill whose failure to pass, would have been so unpopular it would have been a guaranteed death sentence to whichever party was stupid enough to do so.
Ahhhh…. [dreamily]. And Where’s George W. Bush when you need him…. (anyways, back to the task at hand).
According to BBC News,
Not surprisingly, …The Senate passed the bill 96 to 3, with many admitting that the bipartisan measure was aimed at restoring public confidence in the legislative body. “When polls show low public confidence in Congress, there is a strong desire to address the concerns that underpin the public’s scepticism,” Maine Republican Susan Collins said at the time of the bill’s passage. The STOCK Act was supported by both parties as an attempt to restore trust in a Congress with historically low approval ratings….There is “obviously more that we can do to close the deficit of trust”, Mr Obama said at the bill signing.
Well, now that you mention it Mr. Obama, I think that you would be hard pressed to restore that trust. No amount of good-will could make me have faith in a government that has illegally wire-tapped its own citizens, detained them without either charge or trial, subverted legal organizations opposed to illegal activities carried out in OUR name and using government i.e. taxpayer’s money to do so. There assuredly does in fact exist a deficit of trust, or “credibility gap”, call it whatever you like, it still translates the same to most Americans our government can NOT be trusted. You could begin to give more trans To believe otherwise and blindly place your faith in these omnipotent, omniscient “leaders”, isn’t patriotism….its suicide. The United States government has lied to, manipulated, covered up, hid and denied things, anything, important things, essential things since we first gave another man the right to make decisions FOR us. The good news is, we’re not alone in this apparantly its epidemic. Forgive me if I dont skip down the street with glee, because the government finally codified something. Basic, simple common sense or a minimal adherance to some degree of morals should have led to this conclusion long ago.
It makes you think what other, less publicized things do we assume either are or are not being done by our elected officials which in fact are counterintuitive.
One signature doesn’t erase the stain the government left by allowing Bernie Madoff, or the Lewinsky affair, (and our love of it). The Iraq War, Iran Contra, The Vietnam War, Watergate, Gulf of Tonkin (all of them illegal, duplicitous, and disgraceful)… government kickbacks, Halliburton contracts, the list goes on. These are just what has been not only exposed, but caught our commercial length attention span.
In response to Mr. Obama’s statement about there being more that could be done….,” dontchathink”?
Entire generations have grown up under the stain of the Pentagon Papers, hostages in Iran, military and government ineptitude, Hurricane Katrinaand the blatant racialization of govenment aid, and enforcement of laws exhibited through Treyvan Martin or the story of Howard Morgan, and too many others to even attempt naming,
Combine all of this with the knowledge that we could very well be in a time where children go further and do less well than their parents. An increasingly shrinking middle class, shakey economy built upon inflated numbers, or conjured out of hot air just waiting to burst. In the meantime companies post record profits and the gap between Mitt Romney or Donald Trump’s income and that of the rest of us continues to grow exponentially.
You threw the dog a bone, but we demand more.
